The Stadmauer

Old Town Wall

The Stadmauer, old city wall, Berlin, GermanyKnown as the Stadmauer the old town wall was erect in the 13th century. Built from stone and brick it had once surrounded Berlin and Colln. Berlin and  Colln were originally 13th century settlements on opposite  banks of the Spree River. Colln was the first recorded settlement on what is now the Nickolaiviertel, on Museum Island. The two settlements later formed an alliance and became Berlin-Colln.
By the 17th century the Stadmauer, having no strategic use, was slowly dismantled. There are only a few small sections of the wall surviving today.
